In today’s post, we take a look at the important services offered by women’s advisory centres in Austria – a theme which opens up new perspectives within the framework of “Hope for the Future”. This is because the support offered by advisory centres has long made them more than merely a place of sanctuary for women; they can also be a life-changing milestone on the road back to normality.
What services do women´s advisory centres offer?
The countrywide network of the Federal Association of Austrian Women´s and Girls Advisory Centres makes it possible to offer locally accessible, free, confidential and anonymous advice to all women and girls in Austria. This includes social, legal, psychological and professional issues – a holistic service range which can help those using it to strike out in new directions. This can also be seen at the national level: The website of the Women’s Advice Lower Austria, for example, says the following about its work with women and girls: “We advise and inform … on personal, social, legal, economic, professional and health-related questions, and support you if you have been affected by physical, mental or sexual violence.” Clearly, then, the advisory centres offer far more than just short/term help – they open up new room for manoeuvre.

Creating new perspectives instead of coming to a standstill
Many women find themselves confronted by the challenge of leaving behind violence, excessive stress and social barriers. To enable them to achieve this, women’s advisory centres offer not just protection, but also a future. They do so by accompanying, informing and strengthening their users, so helping them change their circumstances for the better: legal advice, for instance, enables its users to take steps against violence or design custody- or separation-related questions. Professional orientation and support can enable women to overcome economic dependencies – a key foundation of self-determination. Psychological support strengthens the “I” resource, helps in cases of traumatisation, and creates the space necessary to make a new start. Networking and community aspect: Those who no longer feel alone increase their ability to initiate real change.
This all shows that women’s advisory centres are places offering a new start – not just hotlines during moments of crisis, but also spaces for future-oriented thinking. They represent a hugely important source of support for women and girls in Austria.
Challenges and opportunities for 2025
Despite the strong infrastructure in place in major Austrian cities, there is still room for improvement; in rural regions, for instance, greater attention needs to be drawn to women’s advisory centres and how to access them. The range of services offered needs to be highly visible, and the barriers to using them low: The website of Women´s Advice Lower Austria doesn´t just list numerous locations, but also emphasises that all its services are “confidential and free of charge”. There is also a focus on networking with other institutions, providing digital advice, and language-related/cultural services – enabling the network to reach people with a migration background or living in isolated circumstances more effectively. The year 2025 showed that: advisory centres can build bridges – between what has already been experienced and the future, the need for help and self-efficacy, and a crisis period and a more positive perspective.
Outlook: Hope for the Future
With its slogan “Hope for the Future”, the group seeks to say the following: Any woman who finds her way to one of its advisory centres has the chance to actively design her life situation – rather than merely reacting to external change. The advisory centres offer more than just protection: They accompany their members during periods of change, support them in planning a new path, and open up perspectives that go beyond immediate “survival”.
Anyone living with anxiety, for example, or stuck in a damaging relationship, may know that there are people there ready and able to listen to them, understand them and plan a future together with them. It also offers ways out of the crisis and beyond – towards self-determination, safety and a new chapter. The women´s advisory centres in Austria stand for this – as a place of hope and new possibilities.
